Monday - Owner's Manual for Your Brain: Empathy. Video lecture on journaling & mindfulness practice. We have only one more journal topic after this and then we'll do a final piece of reflective writing (next week).

Monday - Posted "Nature - One Minute Writings". Please use the posted document to turn this assignment in.

Monday - Posting article, TED Talk and assignment on STRESS.
Wednesday - Posting video lecture for Owner's Manual for Your Brain Journal: STRESS. Assignment due on Friday, April 17th.

Monday - Friday, April 6th - 10th

Monday & Tuesday - Practice Google Meet session, just to make sure we can all figure it out before it counts. Look for the code in a Google Classroom message.
  • Period 2 will meet Monday at 10 am.
  • Period 7 will meet Tuesday at noon.
Wednesday through Friday - Contact me if you have any questions. I will be preparing materials for distance learning which begins April 13th.

Meanwhile, please have your Memoir Project complete for Monday, April 13th.

  • Meet up on Zoom on Tuesday, if possible. This is just to touch base and try out this virtual conferencing thing.
  • Check your "phbillies.org" account regularly. Practice assignments posted next week.

Plans for the school shut down...

First of all, please stay healthy and safe.  Limiting the disaster ahead depends on us all thinking and acting for the benefit of the community.

You will be responsible for writing your Memoir Project.  Do this on the Google Classroom document I have posted, or hand-written.  


Monday - Friday, March 9th - 13th

Monday - Funds of Knowledge: Keeping yourself safe out in the world.  "How To" booklets.  
Tuesday - Funds of Knowledge: Relationships!  We'll look at this article: Relationship Advice and so an activity demonstrating three skills. 
Wednesday - Writing from "best lines".  Talk about point of view & framing.
Thursday - Memoir Project.  Before we get started on the writing, let's do a quick review of common errors: FIX YOUR GRAMMAR.
Friday - Memoir Project.

Monday - Friday, March 2nd - 6th

Monday - Funds of Knowledge: Life on the Job.  The Tipping Equation.  
Tuesday/Wednesday (BLOCK) - Finish the reading and do a skills demo on Google Classroom.  This one is a bit challenging, so please take your time to read the whole article with care. 
Thursday - Funds of Knowledge: Life & Death.  
Friday - Article: On Killing and working on identifying arguments.


Monday - Friday, February 24th - 28th

Monday - Finish presentations & be ready to share tomorrow.

2nd Semester Begins!


Monday - Thursday, January 27th - 30th

Monday - Tomorrow's skills demo on the book will be a one-shot only assignment.  No retakes offered.  We'll use this day to complete the reading.
Tuesday - Part 1 of TRUE GRIT is due for a skills demo.  
Wednesday - More time on that skills demo.  When you finish. study for the vocab exam.  
Thursday - Last day of the semester.  Last chance VOCAB QUIZ on these words: True Grit Vocab Quizlet!  If you have already passed a vocab exam this semester, you can try to pass this one for five extra credit points (the only extra credit of the semester).


Tuesday - Friday, January 21st - 24th

No school on Monday in honor of MLK Jr.
Tuesday/Wednesday (BLOCK) - Sharing stories.  Vote on True Grit movie version: the old one or the new one.  Check out the book!  I will offer you a reading guide that is totally optional.  Vocab study.  Last chance exam next week!
Thursday -  Illustrations about GRIT.   
Friday - Take the Penn State survey about grit & write a quick response.  Angela Duckworth's TED Talk on Grit and a quick practice assignment in Google Classroom. 


Monday - Friday, January 13th - 17th

Monday - Finish up that Writing Dialogue presentation (reported speech).  Writing day.
Tuesday - Writing day.
Wednesday - Writing day.  Try to wrap it up by the end of class!
Thursday - One more day.


Tuesday - Friday, January 7th - 10th

Tuesday/Wednesday (BLOCK) -  We'll start back with a pretty cool short story: Playing Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom PainResponse & discuss story telling.  The Western Genre and Top 10 Westerns.  Take excellent notes!  We'll be writing a western short story and our next book is TRUE GRIT.  I will consider this piece of writing for your Essential Skills graduation requirement.    
Thursday - Create character notes & story planning.
Friday - Narrative arc & writing dialogue (first six slides).

Monday - Friday, December 16th - 20th

Monday - Catcher in the Rye/Interview Essay.  Focus on outlines.  
Tuesday/Wednesday (BLOCK) - Catcher in the Rye/Interview Essay workday.  
Thursday - Catcher in the Rye/Interview Essay workday.  Last day!  Please use this Checklist before you turn it in.
Friday -  Peer editing.  


Monday - Friday, December 9th - 13th

Monday - Interview project: generating questions.
Tuesday - Build surveys today for your interview questions.  This is just one way you can conduct your interviews.
Wednesday - Next section of Catcher in the Rye due today for an assignment.  Please finish the book for next week.
Thursday - Book notes.
Friday - Essay starts next week, so let's have a quick grammar review.


Monday - Friday, December 2nd - 6th

PLEASE KEEP UP WITH CATCHER IN THE RYE READINGS: THIS WEEK DUE: All the way through CHAPTERS 16-20.
Monday - Presentations begin.  
Tuesday/Wednesday (BLOCK) - Wrap up presentations.  When we finish, we will have an assignment on Chapters 12-20 of Catcher in the Rye.  
Thursday - Continue assignment.
Friday - Illustrations.

Monday -  Final writing day!  Please use the checklist to do a careful editing before you hit "turn in".  
Tuesday -   Just by Listening, an article from the Washington Post, plus an assignment.
Wednesday - Make-up day!  Wrap up the essay, if you were absent.  Work on yesterday's skills demo.  Make any revisions to first quarter work.
Thursday - Halloween!  The Great Candy Corn Debate.
Friday - Deadline for revisions & make-up work!  That Just by Listening assignment must be done by today.  Forbes article on listening skills - small group assignment & 10 Steps activity.


Monday - Friday, October 21st - 25th

Monday  - Notes on the end of the book.  Moral lense vs. economic lense.
Tuesday/Wednesday (BLOCK) - Begin essay.  Focus on your outline today.
Thursday/Friday (Half-Day) - Essay work day.  You will only have one more class period after today.


Monday - Friday, October 14th - 18th

Monday - Small group assignment: Elements of Structure.
Tuesday - Complete notes & get ready to present.
Wednesday - PSAT/work day.  Catcher in the Rye Vocab Quizlet
Thursday - Present.  Please take excellent notes: this is the basis of your essay next week.

Thursday - Reflection on Maslow's Heirarchy of needs as it relates to The Road.  Go over Wednesday's assignments.

Tuesday/Wednesday (BLOCK) - The Power of Altruism, an article from the New York Times and this practice assignment.  Share and then continue here.  Our first skills demo is Thursday on this very article!
Thursday - Skills demo on the last section of the article we've been working on.

Wednesday - Welcome!  Look at the class syllabus and go over expectations.  Log in to Google Classroom, if we have time.
Thursday - Writing diagnostic.  This is a chance for me to get a snapshot of your writing skills as they stand today. 
Friday - Check out some samples of your writing and talk about what skills we need to address this year.
