Monday - Poetry Project: Rhythm. Video lecture & practice assignment.
**It's time to start catching up, if you are behind, and shoring up your semester grade. I will be in contact with folks who are having trouble.**

Monday - Friday, May 4th - 8th

Monday - Posted video lecture on the POETRY PROJECT - Intro & Imagery. Take excellent notes. Assignment in Google Classroom called "Imagery Builder" is due Friday.
Friday - Please turn in poetry assignment and anything else missing from GLASS CASTLE. If it's something that's already in the grade book, please send me an email and tell me to go back to it, or else I won't see it. Thanks!


Monday - Friday, April 27th - May 1st

Monday - Video lecture posted for the END OF THE BOOK & ideas for the FINAL ESSAY. Due Friday. Document to be found in Classroom.
Friday - Final Essay due. If you are having trouble, please contact me.

Monday - Practice Assignment & Video Lecture on Part 2 are loaded up into Google Classroom. Please take care of these by the end of the week.

Monday & Tuesday - Practice Google Meet session, just to make sure we can all figure it out before it counts. Look for the code in a Google Classroom message.
  • Period 1 will meet Monday at 9 am.
  • Period 5 will meet Tuesday at 10 am.

Monday, March 30th - Friday, April 3rd

  • Work on THE GLASS CASTLE. Please follow the reading schedule, although we will be reviewing sections once we get back to real school on April 13th.
  • Meet up on Zoom on Wednesday, if possible. This is just to touch base and try out this virtual conferencing thing.
  • Please check your "phbillies.org" account regularly. I will post a practice assignment for the book next week.

First of all, please stay healthy and safe.  Limiting the disaster ahead depends on us all thinking and acting for the benefit of the community.

Bring your copy of The Glass Castle home with you and keep up with the readings schedule,  If the closure extends beyond April 1st, we will be doing skills demos on Google Classroom, remotely.

Monday - Vocab study: Glass Castle Quizlet & these sample sentences.  Please copy words & definitions into your notebooks and study the sample sentences, so you know how the words are used.  
Tuesday - What Aggression Really Means to Boys.  A little practice assignment.  We are gearing up for our next book, a memoir called The Glass Castle.  
Wednesday - More time?  Documentary: A Place at the Table.
Thursday - A Place at the Table.  Illustrated article: The Difference Being Broke and Being Poor & response.
Friday - Finish up responses and share ideas.  Quizlet LIVE!

Tuesday - Friday, February 18th - 21st

No school on Monday in observance of Presidents' Day.
Tuesday (BLOCK) - Lesson plans for the final Issues Project presentation.  1st Period Schedule HERE.  5th Period Schedule HERE.
Thursday - Presentations!  While we're out in the Commons doing our thing, everyone else will be writing up an Essential Skills persuasive essay, based on your group research.
Friday - Continuing.  Essays are due by the end of the period.  No exceptions.  Late work will not be accepted.

Tuesday - More time?  You can wrap up your PSA's, if you have extra time.
Wednesday - TED Talk search.

Monday - Okay, there are a lot of students shifting between classes, so I will have to delay the group organization until everyone is settled.  Meanwhile, let's talk about HOW TO TALK.  Let's watch Turning Down the Heat....
Tuesday (BLOCK) - Introduction to the Issues Project.  This is a wide-ranging project with a lot of points attached to it.  Today we will begin with individual writing position statement and discussing preliminary positions. 
Thursday -  I will give you an article on your topic to start with and analyze.  We are practicing skills that we will demonstrate tomorrow. 
Friday - The PSA.


2nd Semester Begins!


Monday - Thursday, January 27th - 30th

Monday - Debate topic survey.  Argument analysis - "Fire" episode of "Cooked".
Tuesday - Argument analysis - "Fire" episode of "Cooked".  Study vocab for tomorrow, with time remaining: Vocab Quizlet: Functional Vocabulary.  
Wednesday - We'll put the vocab exam off until tomorrow.  Today, please do this short opinion piece writing assignment.  
Thursday - Last day of the semester.  Last chance VOCAB QUIZ on these words Vocab Quizlet: Functional Vocabulary.  If you have already passed a vocab exam this semester, you can try to pass this one for five extra credit points (the only extra credit of the semester). 


Tuesday - Friday, January 21st - 24th

No school on Monday for MLK Day.
Tuesday (BLOCK) - Last work day for the presentations for the first part of class, checklist, and then we will be watching an episode of "Cooked" that addresses some key issues about food.

Monday - Here's a Vocab Quizlet: Functional Vocabulary, just in case you still need to pass a vocab quiz this semester!  We'll have a quiz next week.  Meanwhile, let's start the Fast Food Nation excerpt & skills demo. 
Tuesday - More time?  Still need to pass a vocab exam this semester?  Here is the final Vocab Quizlet (Functional Vocab #1) of the quarter!
Wednesday - Food Issues Project!  We'll talk about means of persuasion, types of evidence, etc.  Here's a sample slideshow, although it's very simplistic & missing the narrative piece: Why is it so freaking cold in here?

Tuesday - Friday, January 7th - 10th

Tuesday (BLOCK) -  Talk about documentary and journalism.  What are the rules of journalism and how has news become a source of controversy?  What is the power of storytelling?  Here are some clips we will be looking at: The Five Core Values of JournalismNarrative in Journalism in Politics, Five Food Documentaries.  Worksheets for all!  We'll be working on persuasive presentations next week, so we are prepping for that.  Read an excerpt from The Jungle in the text book & do a short assignment, focusing on author's intention.  
Thursday - Questions on The Jungle - practice assignment. 
Friday - Jim Gaffigan on McDonald's and some writing about food.

Wednesday - Movie time!  I must have permission slips in hand, because this movie is rated R.

Friday - Movie.  Please finish the book over the weekend.  Essay begins Monday.  Maybe check out clips/do corrections from some previous writing, if we have time.

Monday - Let's go over the practice assignment from Friday.
Tuesday/Wednesday (BLOCK) - Skills demo on the third section of Into the Wild (Chapters 9-12).  
Thursday - Preview of Grizzly Man.  Permission slips: this movie is rated R, so I must have permission slips in hand.  Our final essay will be based on a comparison of the movie and Into the Wild, so we need to talk ASAP if you are not allowed to watch this film.
Friday - Grammar notes: Common Mistakes in Sentence Structure.

Monday - Into the Wild vocab Quizlet.  Vocab EXAM!

Thursday - Halloween!  Something fun...
Friday - Deadline for revisions & make-up work!  Read section of Walden in the textbook.  Notes & discussion.  We'll do part of this together, then you will be working on your own.


Monday - Friday, October 21st - 25th

Monday - Presentation & notes on Transcendentalism.  Share a few writings "On Nature".  Get workbooks.
Tuesday (BLOCK) - Ralph Waldo Emerson readings in the workbook.  "Nature" is practice and "Self-Reliance" will be a skills demo.
Thursday (Half-Day) - Illustrations of key passages.  


Monday - Friday, October 14th - 18th

Monday - Essay writing day.
Tuesday - Last essay writing day.  Essays & outlines due at the end of the period.
Wednesday - PSAT day!

Monday - The Codependent Friendship.  Take a look at this and think about how you see these elements in the novel.   
Tuesday (BLOCK) - Skills demo on Part 1 of Of Mice & Men.  Please have your reading done.  
Thursday - Independent Study on hobo culture in America.  Here are some links to get you started: Hobo History, Boxcar Boys & Girls, and this cool chart of hobo graffiti.  Please use this document as a model for your assignment to turn in.  


Monday - Friday, September 16th - 20th

Monday - Check out Of Mice & Men and do mini- presentations.  
Tuesday - Look at the writing style in Of Mice & Men and get a little context.
Wednesday - Vocabulary Quizlet.  
Thursday - Life in a Migrant Laborers' Camp and a practice assignment.

Monday - Slate Magazine article: The Difference between Refugee and Migrant Mattersand this practice assignment.  
Tuesday (BLOCK) - Discuss this assignment and then tackle this article in pairs: The Refugees the World Barely Pays Attention To.  Let's talk about a practice presentation we'll be doing - a very short research presentation about historical migrations around the world.  Quick review of plagiarism policies, too.
Thursday - Begin work on mini-presentations.  Project description HEREMigration in Five Minutes Video.  
Friday - More time?  Begin presentations.  

Wednesday - Friday, September 4th - 6th

Wednesday - Welcome!  Look at the class syllabus and go over expectations.  Log in to Google Classroom, if we have time.
Thursday - Writing diagnostic.  This is a chance for me to get a snapshot of your writing skills as they stand today. 
Friday - Check out some samples of your writing and talk about what skills we need to address this year.
